It was check out day and off to Buenos Aires back via Santiago. It was going to be another long day with an expected arrival time barring any delays of about 2am. Nothing like a restful holiday for busy people.
Having returned from the dawn tour, a quick breakfast saw us hounding our tour guide James again.
James was on time as usual to take us to Orongo which is Easter Island's most dramatic setting. The rim of Rano Kau's crater and 1,000 foot cliffs it was the traditional site of the bird man ritual. Not too dissimilar to our try-athalon without the bike leg.....readers can see me to explain this ritual which basically involves collecting eggs. On the way up the road follows the side of the mountain with a great back drop to the only town Hanga Roa.
Alas it was almost time to leave. Without a doubt my everlasting memory on earth with be in this order;
- Mandy and the Kids,
- Easter Island, and
Ok, maybe to be serious;
- Mandy and the kids,
- Heineken together with a rib steak on Easter Island, and
- Family (this will keep Mandy happy)
Farewell for now. I want to come back.
It was ironic. This Moai was in the departure point for the airport. Throughout the visit our guide was adamant about conservation of the Moai and in fact poor Mandy happened by accident to touch one earning his wrath. This Moai at the airport was photographed by all and sundry including nearly everyone climbing over it and doing everything but having sex with it. That has probably happened too!
